Minister: Netanyahu indecisive, irresponsible

Infrastructure minister slams government procrastination on electricity shortage, water, gas; says PM sets up committees instead of making decisions

Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau on Sunday harshly criticized the government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership, accusing it of procrastination and irresponsibility. Talking to Ynet, Landau – a senior minister from the rightwing Yisrael Beitenu party – also singled out the finance minister for criticism.

Claiming the government was unable to make decisions, concentrating on "pulling rabbits out of hats" and setting up numberless committees, Landau joined the growing list of public figures expressing their dissatisfaction with Netanyahu's leadership, and noted specifically the government's inability to handle the electricity issue: "The prime minister repeatedly postpones making decisions, and the situation is getting worse and worse," he said.

The Ministry of Infrastructure has requested that more power stations be built to prevent a potentially dangerous shortage of electricity. Despite lengthy debates, no decision has been reached.

"The gap between electricity production and needs is growing," Landau said, noting that yet another committee was set up in August and its findings were to be submitted within 90 days. "Since then, five months have gone by and nothing has been done."

Had a decision been made, the minister said, the first power station could have been planned in 2010, but due to the delays, nothing is likely before 2013. "Instead of deciding, (the government) decides on more and more committees," he said. "The Finance Ministry is leading the prime minister by the nose, and instead of deciding, they pull yet another rabbit from the hat – and the prime minister swallows it all."

Though Landau focused his remarks on the issue of the Israel Electric Corporation, he noted this was not the only problem.

"The same thing is happening with the water industry," he said. "We are approaching an emergency period regarding water. The Finance Ministry must come up with answers. There're also problems with the light railway in Tel Aviv, and also with the gas… Wherever you look, they're procrastinating. The prime minister is responsible; he must bear the responsibility for ensuring Israel's citizens are supplied with these things."
