US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has arrived in Yemen on an unannounced visit to shore up ties with a fragile ally that is fast becoming the focus of American counterterrorism efforts.
Under tight security, Clinton landed Tuesday in the capital of Sanaa to press Yemeni leaders to do more to crack down on extremism that has bled into the West. She wants Yemen to ease conditions that have fueled domestic strife and attracted radicals like US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who officials say inspired recent attacks against America.
