Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced his decision, together with the prime minster, to appoint Major General Benny Gantz, a former deputy IDF chief of staff, as Israel's 20th IDF chief. The appointment will be examined by the Turkel Commission.
In an statement issued by the Defense Ministry it said: "The prime minister and the defense minster feel it is very important at this time to remove all uncertainties regarding the IDF chief of staff appointment and stabilize the army by appointing an IDF chief of staff who will lead the IDF in the challenges ahead."
