Burqa-clad female police officers fight crime in Gaza

Hamas establishes special police unit to handle interrogation, incarceration of female criminals; officers trained in use of M-16

Hamas' security apparatus in Gaza has recently introduced a special police unit comprised solely of burqa-clad female officers.

"Whenever there is a female suspect, the women's police unit arrives at the scene and handles the entire process, from the interrogation of the suspect to her incarceration," said unit commander Narmin Aduan, adding that the female officers strictly observe Muslim tradition.

Unit commanders said the women, like all Hamas police, are trained in the use of firearms, including M-16s, because they may find themselves in life-threatening situations.

The female police officers take part in the fight against smuggling and drug use in Gaza, the commanders added. Hamas' security forces have requested that the women also assist the Islamist group's armed wing in routine activity along the coastal enclave's borders.

"We have a strategic plan that involves training the female officers and then appointing them to a wide variety of posts," Aduan said. "We teach them how to deal with female convicts, how to interrogate women and much more."
