Lebanon arrests dentist for 'spying for Israel'

Security forces accuse 55-year-old Farouk Shukheir of spying for Israel, claim suspect admits to working with Israeli elements since 2004

Lebanese security forces Thursday night arrested a dentist from the southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun who is accused of spying for Israel. According to reports, 55-year-old Farouk Shukheir was arrested after authorities received intelligence information about his activity.

Authorities claim Shukheir admitted to working with Israeli elements since 2004.

Just last week a Lebanese army court sentenced a man to death for allegedly providing the Mossad with information on Hezbollah operations.

The Lebanese army uncovered two "spying facilities" two months ago at Jabal Sanin and Jabal El-Baruch. The Lebanese claimed the spy facility in El-Baruch was 1,715 meters (5,626 feet) high and made up of two artificial rocks. The first rock contained devices for sending and receiving messages from the western and central valley of Lebanon all the way to the Syrian border, as well as a number of villages along the way from the southern to the northern border.

According to reports, the devices were made in Israel and had the ability to secure the connection between wireless stations across Lebanon to locations across Israel.

Inside the second rock Lebanese authorities found a large amassment of batteries which were supposed to supply the device with electricity for years to come.

Lebanon has filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel, saying that Israel had planted two spy systems in Baroque and Sanin in order to receive and send information and to serve as a link between Israeli spies.

Lebanon even accused Israel of installing tracking cameras in the area.
