Iran: Khatami calls on gov't to release opposition leaders

Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami called on the regime in Tehran to release opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi. "Why have these two people, who have a brilliant past in the revolution and the Islamic republic, been placed under arrest?" he asked in a message he posted on his website.

It was reported earlier that Mousavi and Karroubi, who are detained by the Revolutionary Guard, have been transferred to a facility outside Tehran. According to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, the two are being watched but have not been placed in prison. (Dudi Cohen and AFP)
