German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Saturday he believed Muammar Gaddafi would not be able to stay in power after his brutal reponse to the popular uprising in Libya and his rule was over.
In an article to be published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper on Sunday, Westerwelle criticised the European Union for not acting sooner to impose sanctions against Gaddafi. "A ruling family which conducts a war so brutally against its own people is finished. The dictator cannot stay," he said, adding: "The EU was initially too hesitant." (Reuters)
