Philippine rebels kill 3 soldiers, wound 4 others
Philippine police say suspected communist rebels have killed three soldiers and wounded four others in an ambush despite the recent resumption of peace talks. Police Senior Superintendent Laurence Mombael says New People's Army rebels fired at about 30 army troops on patrol near Asipulo township in northern mountainous Ifugao province on Saturday then fled.
Mombael said Sunday that reinforcement troops brought by a helicopter later clashed with and wounded an unspecified number of fleeing rebels. Government and rebel negotiators last week resumed talks in Norway after more than six years and agreed to negotiate for a settlement of the 42-year conflict, one of Asia's longest, possibly by June 2012.
