Abbas: Time for Palestine in UN

In joint press conference with Chilean counterpart, Palestinian president reiterates his objection to interim agreement with Israel. Pinera: Palestinians should have their own state, freedom of movement

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday reiterated his objection to the initiative to launch negotiations for an interim peace agreement with Israel.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Chile's President Sebastian Pinera, Abbas said he had received no request on the matter and that he would reject the idea in any event.

"We know there was an idea in the past to establish a state within temporary borders, and if this idea is raised again – we won't accept it," Abbas said. He added that it was time to establish a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, which would join the United Nations in September.

The Palestinian president expressed his objection to the initiative to launch negotiations for an interim agreement on Thursday. Sources at the Prime Minister's Office said in response that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would likely abandon the idea.

Abbas added that he would plead with the International Quartet on the Middle East to take all measures required "to end the Israeli aggression and the occupation of our land".

The Chilean president said that it was time for the Palestinian to have their own state. Pinera, who recognized an independent Palestinian state in January, clarified that "the Palestinians should have a sovereign state and freedom of movement. They must be allowed to live in peace with all their neighbors in the region."

He added that he had decided to recognize a Palestinian state in order to express his country's support for the peace process.
