White House deplores Sudan violence

The White House is condemning violence in a contested area of Sudan that is at the center of the dispute between the north and south and where a recent surge of attacks has killed more than 100 people.

In a statement Wednesday, the White House called on northern and southern Sudanese leaders to act swiftly to avoid future attacks. The statement condemned the presence of forces in the disputed region near the town of Abyei and noted that it violates the 2005 peace agreement between the north and south. (AP)
