Embattled Yemen president seeks unity government

Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh, battling to defuse violent protests against his 32-year rule, called on Friday for the creation of a unity government tasked with drawing up a new electoral system.

"A national unity government should be formed to prepare for a new election law," Saleh told a political rally in this impoverished country, which has been shaken by weeks of nationwide demonstrations. (Reuters)
