Azerbaijan activists detained at attempted rally
Police in Azerbaijan on Friday briefly detained at least 23 people attempting to hold an improvised anti-government demonstration in the capital of the oil-rich former Soviet nation, a rights activist said.
Online activists called on Facebook for demonstrators to gather Friday in the center of Baku, where the police presence was noticeably heightened. Police detained some activists near the central Jafar Jabbarli square where they tried to hold a rally. A group of activists later managed to walk a few hundred meters on the central Nizami Avenue, chanting "Freedom!" until police stopped them and detained several participants. (AP)
