Petition: Probe Barak in foreign worker affair

Female settler leader says AG's decision not to prosecute defense minister for employment of illegal foreign worker at Tel Aviv flat 'blatantly chauvinistic'

Shomron Settlers' Committee Director Ester Karish filed a High Court Petition on Tuesday against Yehuda Weinstein and Ehud Barak, in which she demanded that the attorney general explain why the defense minister was not added to an indictment which accused his wife, Nili Priel, of illegally employing a foreign worker at the couple's Tel Aviv apartment.

In the petition, Karish said Weinstein's decision does not live up to the so-called "Buzaglo standard", according to which a high-ranking official must be held to the same judicial standards as an ordinary citizen.

"Numerous indictments are filed every day over lesser offences – against both the husband and wife," she claimed, while mentioning that a Jewish husband and wife from Hebron, who allegedly encroached on Palestinian-owned property during the renovation of their kitchen, were indicted as a couple.

Karish further claimed that Weinstein's decision not to investigate or prosecute Barak was "irrational" and is "blatantly chauvinistic."

She said it was "hardly likely that the foreign worker only washed dishes used by Mrs. Barak and not those used by Mr. Barak."

According to Karish, Weinstein's decision "dealt a severe blow to the aspiration for equality between the sexes."
