Israel returns czarist site in Jerusalem to Russia

Decision to return Sergei's Courtyard could generate goodwill ahead of Netanyahu's visit to Moscow this week

Israel is returning to Russia a landmark in the heart of Jerusalem that was built by Czar Alexander II.

The decision to vacate the property known as Sergei's Courtyard defuses a long-standing dispute between the two countries and could generate new goodwill ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Moscow this week.

An Israeli official says the authorities are "vacating the Sergei Courtyard in accordance with the understandings reached between Israel and the Russian federation."

Netanyahu is expected to urge Moscow not to sell sophisticated missiles to Syria and to support efforts to keep Iran's nuclear ambitions in check.
