Obama favors Gaddafi stepping down from power

US President Barack Obama says he wants to see Moammar Gaddafi step down from power in Libya but that US military action there is limited to protecting civilians and preventing a humanitarian crisis from taking place.

Speaking in Santiago, Chile at a news conference with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Obama said Gaddafi has been very clear about showing "no mercy" to those who opposed him. (AP)
