Prof. Gabriela Shalev joins Hillel Israel

Former Israeli ambassador to UN agrees to become member of board of director of Center for Jewish Campus Life in Israel

Hillel – The Center for Jewish Campus Life in Israel (Hillel Israel) announced this week that Professor Gabriella Shalev, Israel’s former ambassador to the United Nations, has agreed to become a member of its Board of Directors.

Hillel Israel works to promote pluralistic Jewish identity among students and young adults across the country, at eight centers on campus and in the community.

Hillel Israel is the Israeli division of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the largest Jewish student organization in the world, with over 520 centers on five continents.

The chairman of the Hillel Israel board is Adam Bronfman, and the deputy and Acting Chairman is Joseph Ciechanover, former director-general of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, former chairman of the Board of El Al Israel Airlines and Israel Discount Bank, and Israel’s representative on the United Nation’s Gaza flotilla panel.

Professor Shalev currently serves as president of the Higher Academic Council of Ono Academic College, after concluding her two-year term as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. She was the first woman in Israel’s history to fill this post.

Prior to her term at the United Nations, Prof. Shalev was a member of many public bodies and committees, among them Acting Chairman of the Israel Broadcasting Authority, member of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors, member of the Tribunal for Standard Form Contracts, and a member of the Boards of Directors of leading Israeli companies (Teva Pharmaceuticals Industry, Osem Investments, Delek Ltd.)

“We are happy to welcome Professor Gabriella Shalev to the Hillel Israel Board of Directors," said Hillel Israel Board Chairman Joseph Ciechanover. "Her vast experience over the years in her various positions, especially in her latest post, where she dealt a great deal with building international support for Israel, will constitute an important contribution to the promotion of the organization.”

Hillel Israel Director General David Ya’ari added, “We are sure that her experience and public stature, her familiarity with world Jewry and the Jewish communities of the United States, as well as the Israeli academic world, in which Hillel Israel operates, will add significantly to the advancement of Hillel Israel’s activities and vision.”
