Noam Shalit: PM motivated by politics

Captive soldier's father slams Netanyahu, saying politicians always think about ways to gain profit

Noam Shalit, father of captive soldier Gilad Shalit, slammed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday saying the fact his son has not been released yet is disgraceful.

Shalit added that Netanyahu was motivated by political considerations as far as his efforts to free Gilad were concerened.

Speaking to students at Ber-Ilan University, Shalit said: "I have no doubt that the considerations guiding decision makers are also political in nature."

As the university marked the Gilad Shalit Awareness Day, the captive soldier's father said, "I do not know to what extent this is the case, but no doubt a politician is a politician and is always thinking of ways to gain something."

Shalit also charged that his son remains captive as result of a series of blunders by decision makers.

"Our Gilad has been forsaken alone in the dark for nearly five years," he said

Earlier on Monday, Bar-Ilan students held a vigil for Shalit on campus.

'Deal with terrorists later'

Referring to claims that prisoners released as part of a swap deal will resume terror activities, the captive soldier's father said that the government "must return Gilad home and later, if necessary, deal with the terrorists and neutralize them."

"We did it before and we can do it again," he said.

In order to demonstrate the length of time that has passed since his son was kidnapped, Shalit reminded the students of what they have been doing for the past five years: "Studying in high school, serving in the IDF, traveling, making new friends, fighting with old ones, connecting on Facebook – Gilad doesn't even know what Facebook is."

The captive soldier's father added: "A few days a go a little boy who was born on the day Gilad was captured visited our protest tent. This child is almost five-years-old, talking, running, laughing and thinking. Soon he will start attending elementary school. An entire life formed as Gilad rots in Gaza."
