State comptroller: IDF controls 79% of Israel's land

The IDF controls, directly or indirectly, 79% of the land in Israel, according to a report on the defense system that was recently released by the state comptroller. According to the report, 39% of the lands are defined as firing ranges that are used for training purposes. Civilian use of the remaining 40% of the land is restricted.

The report also shows that the IDF holds nearly 55,000 dunam (13,590 acres) of valuable land that is located near urban centers. The IDF is delaying in vacating these territories despite a government decision that addressed the matter in 1993, and despite the fact that some of the bases are abandoned and are costly to maintain.
