After Japan: US nuclear regulator to study plants' backup power

The US nuclear regulator will closely study whether U.S. plants have enough backup power to keep reactors and fuel pools cool during power failures in the wake of the Japan disaster, a top official said on Tuesday.

The US fleet of 104 reactors complies with site-specific "station blackout" rules, but the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will scrutinize whether those plans are sufficient, Bill Borchardt, the NRC's operations director, told reporters. (Reuters)
