Egypt to vote on president by end of year

None

An Egyptian presidential election will be held by the end of the year and the ruling military council will exercise the powers of the head of state until then, the military council said on Wednesday.

Mamdouh Shaheen, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said the military council would cede legislative powers to a new parliament once it is elected in September. The presidential election would happen a month or two after the parliamentary vote, he told a news conference to announce a constitutional decree which will provide a legal basis for the interim administration.
