Student committee elections at a university in Jordan's capital ended Wednesday with a mass brawl between Arab-Israeli students and their classmates.
The riot broke out at the Al Ahlia University in Amman after a Palestinian student named Joseph al-Karni won student committee presidency elections. Another 18 students, mostly Arab-Israelis, were elected to the committee.
The results weren't welcomed by the Jordanian students, one of whom had run in the elections and lost.
Two Israeli students were moderately injured in the brawl and were in need of medical care. Large Jordanian police forces arrived in the area and blocked all access to the campus.
One of the Israeli students told ynet: "The students who didn't like the results – they were the ones responsible for the clash. They brought in lots of local Jordanians during the night; they surrounded the dormitories from all sides and started threatening us…They frightened all of the students, especially the female students who screamed in terror."
The students appealed to Knesset Member Ahmad Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) to intervene and try and find a solution to the situation: "I received a number of requests from students over the clashes with other students following the committee elections.
"I immediately approached the responsible officials within the Jordanian government in addition to the University's administration, who swiftly intervened and solved the problem. I continue to follow the issue in order to keep the students safe."
The university's administrative authority stated that there would be no classes on Thursday in order to restore peace and quiet. "Moreover, we have appointed a committee to investigate the matter. The administration will not stay silent over these acts and those responsible will be punished."
