Iron Dome to reach Tel Aviv area
Anti-missile system to be deployed in central Israel in several weeks as part of testing process, which aims to guarantee maximum protection to both populated areas, sensitive facilities
The anti-missile system Iron Dome is scheduled to move to various locations across Israel in the coming months including the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. The system's second battery will be deployed in Ashkelon on Monday starting a series of tests in order to achieve maximum missile protection in real time.
Recent calm in the Gaza vicinity area has allowed the Air Force to continue testing the system in various locations. The tests include communication, safety and coordination aspects. Soldiers are required to synchronize the various battery components such as radars and intercepting devices.
The first battery, which was deployed near Beersheba last week, is currently undergoing tests and may move to another location in the south shortly. Military sources stressed that the system is able to intercept rockets during the testing period.
The deployment spots were decided in advance and are slated to test the system's ability to protect both populated areas and sensitive facilities.
Currently, Israel possesses only two Iron Dome batteries which are unable to address all threats. It is estimated there will be six batteries within a year. Security sources claim Israel requires 12-13 batteries to defend the country.
