Kurdish rebel violence picks up in Turkey

None

Thousands of Kurdish demonstrators renewed their calls for autonomy in Turkey's southeast during celebrations marking the birthday of an imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief on Monday while seven Turkish soldiers were wounded during clashes with the rebels.

The renewed demands for Kurdish autonomy in the country's southeast comes ahead of elections in June, seen as a test for the government's ability to contain violence and make peace with its restive minority seeking more rights. (AP)
