Lieberman: I'm a man of my word

Following decision to indict him, FM says he always abided by law, has no cause for concern

Commenting on the decision to indict him over a series of alleged offences, subject to a hearing, Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman  said Wednesday evening: "I've always abided by the law and have no cause for concern."

Addressing a national Yisrael Beiteinu conference, Lieberman said: "After 15 years I will finally be given the opportunity to prove that I adhered to the law. You know I am a man of my word."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his hope that Lieberman would prove his innocence. Netanyahu noted that he has been working with the foreign minister for a long time.

"He is a central figure within the government and I hope that he continues to contribute to public life," he said.

Earlier in the day, the foreign minister was informed of Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein's decision to indict him of fraud, money laundering, breach of trust and witness tampering, during Yisrael Beiteinu's third annual conference in Jerusalem.

Further legal action in the case is pending a formal judicial hearing. The foreign minister is not expected to resign until a final decision in his case is made.

Sources in Yisrael Beiteinu told Ynet that Lieberman "has already made it clear that his legal affairs have nothing to do with his political and coalitional issues."

Yisrael Beiteinu, added another source, is not gearing for any major changes following the decision.

"No one is expecting any drama, so things should go on as usual. Yisrael Beiteinu will remain part of the government and Lieberman will wait for the hearing's results before he decide whether or not to resign," the source said. "So for now, there are no urgent meetings or preparations within the party."
