Security Council criticized over rape in Libya

A UN envoy is criticizing the Security Council for failing to mention the risk of sexual violence in Libya as a human rights concern in two resolutions imposing sanctions and authorizing military action to protect civilians.
Margot Wallstrom, the secretary-general's special representative on sexual violence in conflict, said although reports of rape in Libya remain unconfirmed the name of Iman al-Obeidi, who accused militiamen loyal to Moammar Gadhafi of gang-raping her, "is known to all." She also said reports from camps on the Libya-Tunisia border, doctors and the international media suggest her case is not an isolated incident. (AP)
