Southern residents ignore rocket threat, flock to beach on summerlike weekend
Residents of Ashdod and neighboring towns were startled early Friday evening by a siren, after two rockets were launched from Gaza at the southern city. The two Grads exploded in the Ashdod area, one of them near a residential neighborhood and another further away.
"I was a bit worried," admitted Nadav Attias, 29, who arrived at the Ashdod beach on Saturday with his girlfriend. "But I won't let hostilities dictate my life."
Attias, currently living in Beersheba, came to visit his parents in Ashdod over the weekend when the grad missiles exploded.
"We heard a big explosion and ran down the stairs," he said. "Yet the situation hasn't changed my plans. I've been living under constant fear ever since I went to school in Sapir, then Sderot and now in Beersheba."
The IDF retaliated Friday night by attacking two bases belonging to Hamas' military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
However, another Ashdod resident, Katty, opted to stay at home with her children while her husband went to the beach.
"I didn't think it was safe to take the children to an unsecure place like the beach, where there is no fortification. I go out during the day but only to places that have secured rooms," she said.
