Iran appoints 1st ambassador to Egypt in 30 years

Iranian website affiliated with governmnet says Tehran names senior diplomat as first ambassador to Cairo since Islamic Revolution

Reason for concern in Jerusalem? Iran has appointed an ambassador to Egypt – for the first time in 30 years, an Iranian website affiliated with the supporters of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reported on Monday.

According to Mashreq website, Tehran named Ali Akbar Sibouyeh, a senior diplomat with 28 years of experience in the Foreign Service, as the new ambassador to Cairo.

The decision was reached following talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries, but it was still unknown when the ambassador will begin his new post.

The relations between the two countries turned cold after the 1979 Islamic revolution and the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, however relations began to thaw following the revolution that saw long-time President Hosni Mubarak removed from power.

Last month, Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil el-Arabi called on Tehran to "open a new page" in the relations between the two countries, adding that the Islamic Republic was not viewed as an enemy by the new regime in Egypt.

His call was quickly answered by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akar Salehi, who said "the good relation between the countries can help maintain stability and security in the region.

"Of course that there are obstacles in the way, but Iran is taking that under consideration and will overcome them," Salehi added.

Meanwhile, Iran declined to confirm the report. "The news regarding the appointment of an ambassador is guesswork and is hasty," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at his weekly news conference.
