Police: 2 caught smuggling 4.5 kilos of cocaine

Officers stake out airport, arrest two men in their twenties upon return from South America

Two young men from Kiryat Gat were arrested at Ben Gurion International Airport Friday on suspicion they tried to smuggle 4.5 kilograms of pure cocaine from South America into Israel.

Police say officers are familiar with the two – who are in their twenties – and that they have been following them for a number of months.

Recently police became aware that the men had traveled to South America, allegedly to procure the illegal narcotic. Upon their return, officers immediately pounced upon and arrested them, finding them to indeed be in possession of cocaine, police say.

Police have estimated the catch to be worth a few million. The suspects are denying the allegations, claiming that the drugs do not belong to them, but officers say they have enough evidence to incriminate them.

The suspects are currently being questioned in connection to the offense, and they are scheduled to be brought before the court for a hearing on the remand of their arrest Saturday evening.
