Germany says several European countries are summoning Syrian ambassadors and threatening new sanctions targeting the country's leadership if it doesn't halt the repression of protesters.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said the Syrian ambassador in Berlin was summoned to the ministry Wednesday afternoon as part of "a concerted European action." He says European officials will set out to Syrian envoys the sanctions already imposed and make clear that "a second package that also includes the Syrian leadership" will follow quickly if Syria does not immediately change course.
