Pakistan: 16 people killed in NATO fuel tanker blast

At least 16 people were killed early on Saturday when an explosion in northwest Pakistan hit a truck carrying fuel supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan, officials said. "The tanker was on fire because of a blast late in the night. There was another blast early in the morning in the same tanker and 16 people who gathered near it to collect oil were killed," a senior local administration official told Reuters.
Police officials said the first blast was caused by a bomb. Taliban militants seeking to topple the US-backed Pakistani government often claim responsibility for such attacks. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence since US special forces killed Osama bin Laden in his compound not far from the capital Islamabad this month. (Reuters)
