Fires erupt across Israel

Large firefighting units dispatched to extinguish blazes in Golan Heights, Lakhish Regional Council and east Jerusalem. No injuries reported

Summer is barely here, but the fires already are – a blaze erupted on Thursday near the Hapkak (cork) Bridge in the Golan Heights.

The flames quickly spread into the Jilabun River Reserve and have yet to be contained. No injuries were reported. Hikers were evacuated from the area and the reserve was closed to visitors.

Also on Thursday, large firefighting units were called to extinguish a blaze that erupted on IDF training grounds between the communities of Ein-Shekef and Amatzia in Lakhish Regional Council.

The fire erupted at the training grounds around 10 am and spread to fields surrounding the nearby communities. Firefighting teams from Beersheba, Rehovot, Ashkelon and Ashdod, as well as IDF and Israel National Fund tankers were called to the scene.

In addition, four planes from the newly inaugurated Aerial Firefighting Squadron were also dispatched to the area, and assisted the extinguishing efforts.

The fire did not pose a danger to residents, and therefore they were not ordered to evacuate from their houses.

In another incident, eight firefighting units were dispatched to the east Jerusalem neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze'ev and NeveYaacov to extinguish five brush fires that erupted in the area. No injuries were reported, but a container sustained damage.
