Erekat: Israel destroying 2-state solution

Chief Palestinian negotiator slams recent construction in east Jerusalem, says Israel's settlement policies prove it is dedicated to 'destroy fabric of Palestinian life'

Chief Palestinian Negotiator and PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat condemned Thursday the support lent by Israeli government officials to the building of a Jewish neighborhood in east Jerusalem, saying Israel was "destroying the vision of the two-state solution."

The new Jewish neighborhood, built in the heart of east Jerusalem's Ras al-Amud neighborhood, was inaugurated on Wednesday night. The project is expected to house 100 families.

"The Israeli government's settlement policy proves its real vision – to destroy the two-state solution," he said.

Construction as seen in east Jerusalem, he added, "Does not only impede the negotiations, it increases tension and the settlers' racism against Palestinians."

Erekat added that erecting neighborhoods in Palestinian communities is an attempt to destroy the fabric of Palestinian life, and called on the international community to sanction a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

"The international community must take a firm stand against Israel and make (Israel) understand that stating facts on the ground will never make them legal – only war crimes, under the International Law."

Erekat said that it was time for nations that support peace and have yet to recognize the Palestinian state – to do so.
