State to fund umbilical cord blood bank
Knesset's Labor, Welfare and Health Committee approved regulations to establish and fund an umbilical cord blood bank. According to the regulations, the government is expected to allocate hundreds of thousands in funding the collection and storage of 1,000 blood units per year from blood remaining in the attached umbilical cord after childbirth.
Human stem cells from umbilical cord blood can be used to cure a range of diseases, including helping treat leukemia. (Meital Yasur-Beit Or)
