Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch approved the nomination.
Klinger, 44, has been serving in the IPS for 22 years. She was chosen out of four women brigadiers who were slated for the position of head of the Prisoners Division.
"I'm very excited," she told Yedioth Ahronoth, "It's important to note that in the IPS women are promoted for professional reasons, not because they are women."
Klinger's breakthrough appointment joins that of Orna Barbivay, who recently became the first woman to hold the rank of major-general in the IDF.
