NYT names first ever female executive editor
Former DC Bureau chief Jill Abramson inks place in history as first woman to be named to executive editor position in prestigious publication
The New York Times announced this week that managing editor Jill Abramson will become the paper’s first-ever female executive editor, beginning in September.
Bill Keller, the newspaper's current executive editor, will be now focus on writing.
A former Washington bureau chief, Abramson (57) was considered a favorite to succeed Keller since her appointment as managing editor in 2003.
Abramson, who came to the NYT in 1997 from The Wall Street Journal, where she was a deputy bureau chief and an investigative reporter for nine years, is credited with helping the NYT navigate into the digital age.
Along with Abramson, the NYT announced that Dean Baquet, the Washington bureau chief and former editor of The Los Angeles Times, will become the managing editor for news.
Abramson described being named executive editor as “the honor of my life” and like “ascending to Valhalla.” “We are held together by our passion for our work, our friendship and our deep belief in the mission and indispensability of The Times,” she said. “I look forward to working with all of you to seize our future. In this thrilling and challenging transition, we will cross to safety together.”
