Report: US planes hit Yemeni militants

US officials say American forces launched an airstrike against al-Qaida targets in southern Yemen last week to keep al-Qaida's Yemeni offshoot from taking advantage of the unrest there.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the classified operations. The officials said Thursday that the June 3 strike killed a midlevel al-Qaida operative named Abu Ali al-Harithi. (AP)
