Tel Aviv Mideast's most expensive city

Survey ranks Israeli metropolis as 29th most costly city worldwide for foreigners; Jerusalem ranked 33rd

It's not easy living in Israel - a tiny country surrounded by enemies that is also incredibly expensive, new figures show.

An annual cost of living report released recently by ECA International has ranked Tel Aviv as the 29th most expensive city for foreign nationals. Jerusalem made the 33rd place, leaving behind metropolises like Vienna (34th place) and even New York's Manhattan (44th place). The next Middle Eastern city in the report, which reviews 400 cities worldwide, is Dubai, which is ranked 175th.

ECA International, a consulting firm, studied variables like food, drink and entertainment. Since the study addresses the needs of foreign travelers and employees, the housing, education and transportation indices were not included.

According to the ranking, the most expensive city is Tokyo, where movie tickets cost as much as $24, and a beer costs as much as $11. In fact, four Japanese cities have made it to the survey's top 10 most costly towns.

Six Australian cities have made the list's top 30 cities this year – a noteworthy detail considering that only two years ago not one Australian city made the ranking's top 50. But the biggest leap in the latest survey belongs to Caracas, Venezuela, which climbed from 91st place to the 15th in just one year.
