Netanyahu backs Fischer as IMF head

Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer would make an excellent head of the International Monetary Fund and there would be no problem about his age, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday. "Stan Fischer wuold be one hell of an IMF chief," Netanyahu said at a news conference in Rome following a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

He dismissed concerns that the 67 year-old Fischer, a former Number 2 at the Fund, may be too old to take on the post, for which French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is also in the running. "He doesn't have an age handicap. He's very fit, mentally and physically," Netanyahu said. (Reuters)
