State Ombudsman notes surge in public complaints

Annual report reveals 10% rise in number of public complaints in 2010. National Insurance 'leads' list, followed by Police, Finance Ministry

Nearly 14,000 complaints were received in 2010 by the State Ombudsman's Office – a 10% rise compared with 2009. The number of complaints has doubled since 2004 and 28% of the complaints were deemed justified. Leading the complaints list was the National Insurance Institution.

 

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss published State Ombudsman figures as part of his report Monday. and reveals that 13,976 complaints were submitted in 2010, at the head of the list is the National Insurance Institution with 1,332 complaints, a sharp rise from 2009 when the National Insurance received 1,109 complaints.

 

 

The Police Department came in second with 689 complaints and the Finance Ministry took the third place with 459 complaints. They were followed by the Interior Ministry (459); the Justice Ministry (435), the IDF (387), the Education Ministry (302) and the Health Ministry, with 273 complaints.

 

Like the NII, the IDF also noted a sharp rise in the number of complaints filed against it, from 216 in 2009 to 387 in 2010.

 

Meanwhile, Knesset members, who receive special status when submitting a complaint did not seem to be taking advantage of the boon. In total, MKs submitted just 32 complaints in 2010. In comparison, in 2007 MKs submitted 83 complaints.

 

The majority of MK complaints in 2010 came from MK Zevulun Orlev (Habayit Hayehudi) who submitted 19 complaints to the Ombudsman's Office. MK Yoel Hasson (Kadima) submitted 5 complaints and MK Chaim Amsellem (Shas) had two complaints. 111 MKs found no reason to complain.
