'Constant cloud of suspicion intolerable'

Knesset's State Control Committee reviews State comptroller's report on Public Service; MKs demands to be more involved in nominations

The Knesset's State Control Committee convened a special meeting Monday following a scalding report by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss regarding nominations in the Public Service.

The meeting focused mainly on the operations of the Public Sector Locator Committee, which vets candidates for positions in the public sector.

Many of those invited to participate in the meeting demanded their authority in the matter be expanded, at least in matters directly pertaining to their respective ministries.

MK Yoel Hasson, chairman of the Knesset's State Control Committee, said that "It's intolerable that politicians' motive are under a constant cloud of suspicion.

"This perception is inclusive. It's unfair, dangerous and undemocratic, and it weakens the public. The systems today are not balancing each other, they are stifling each other."

The lack of clear government policy on such nominations, Hasson added, "Is a symptom of the government's indecisiveness. Elected officials bear the responsibility and therefore they should have more say in choosing the best people.

"They can't be held accountable on one hand, while being bridled on nominations on the other," he concluded.
