Syrian troops enter new town in north

None

Activists say Syrian tanks are pushing toward more towns and villages near the border with Turkey.

As the government expands its crackdown on dissent, activists report tanks entering the northern town of Maaret al-Numan on Tuesday and other villages near Jisr al-Shughour - a town that came under a military siege Sunday by elite forces backed by helicopters. Human rights activist Mustafa Osso said tanks were also moving Tuesday in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour on the border with Iraq. (AP)
