Iran: Man who raped, murdered niece hanged

Prosecutor says Neyriz resident ripped off 8-year-old niece's gold jewelry after raping her and then murdered her

Iranian authorities executed a man convicted of raping and murdering his 8-year-old niece, state media reported Wednesday.

According to reports, the man was convicted of "acts against modesty" and was hanged in public. General prosecutor of the city of Neyriz said that the man violently raped an 8-year-old girl two years ago.

He said the man was the husband of the girl's aunt. "After the rape he ripped off her gold jewels and murdered her," Muhammad Shabani said.

Since the beginning of the year, at least 155 people were executed in Iran. At least 180 executions were reported in 2010 for charges involving drugs, murder, rape, adultery, armed robbery and espionage. Some human rights group claim that as many as 388 people were executed in the Islamic Republic last year.

Iran has the highest rate of executions in the world relative to its population.
