The Egyptian regime is continuing its efforts to see former President Hosni Mubarak's associates, which Cairo believes are corrupt, brought to justice.
According to "al Youm al Sabea" newspaper, Egyptian businessman Hussein Salam – who is suspected of defrauding the public in connection to Egypt's gas deal with Israel, and fled Egypt at the beginning of its revolution – was arrested in Spain on Thursday.
According to security sources quoted by the daily, two top Egyptian officials have left for Spain to interrogate him, while Cairo is working filing an official motion for extradition with Madrid.
According to the Egyptian prosecution, the charges against Salam include various corruption offenses, which obligate Spain under the various international treaties it is a member of.
Salam is believed to have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit personal gains as a result of brokering Egypt's gas deal with Israel
