Palestinian premier offers to resign for unity

The Palestinian prime minister has offered to step down to clear the way for a new unity government with Hamas. Salam Fayyad told reporters at his West Bank office Tuesday that he does not want to be an obstacle to reconciliation.

The rival Fatah and Hamas agreed last month to end a four-year rift by forming a joint caretaker government to prepare for new elections. The sides have been unable to agree on a prime minister. Fatah's leader, President Mahmoud Abbas, says he wants Fayyad, a US-educated economist, to stay. Hamas believes Fayyad is allied too closely with the West. (AP)
