Katsav: Justice better served by my acquittal

Former president files appeal over rape conviction, claims it should be overturned due to prosecution's 'faulty' practices

Former President Moshe Katsav filed a High Court appeal on Tuesday over his rape conviction.

In the brief, Katsav claimed his conviction should be overturned due to the prosecution's "faulty" manner of "refreshing complainants' memory." He further stated that justice would be "better served" by his acquittal, since he was "tried by the media in advance."

In their plea Katsav's attorneys stressed their objection to the use of testimonies which should have fallen under the statute of limitations.

Katsav was supposed to begin serving his seven year prison sentence eight weeks ago but Judge Yoram Danziger granted an appeal by the former president to postpone the commencement of his jail sentence pending a ruling in his appeal.

In May, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish rejected the request of former President Moshe Katsav's attorneys to expand the panel which will discuss his appeal, claiming "there is not judicial justification to expand the panel.
