Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino has ordered an investigation against producers of a YouTube video that compares police special forces to Nazis.
The video shows footage taped at a number of right-wing protests, combining the footage with scenes from Nazi Germany showing soldiers beating prisoners.
Video uploaded to YouTube a few months ago
Though the clip is dated from a few months ago, police were notified only Sunday. The reason for this may have been a recent shooting targeting a police officer in Nahariya, which rekindled public awareness on the personal security of officers.
A rights group focusing on officer welfare sent a letter to Danino urging him to denounce the tape and launch an investigation.
"There is no doubt that the comparison, as well as the descriptions in the video, are very serious and raise strong doubts as to the lack of protection for police officers in Israel from extremists who watch the footage," Moshe Alon, who represents the rights group, wrote to Danino.
"The writing is on the wall. Police officers in Israel are not fair game and this issue must be handled seriously."
