Italian transport unions strike snarls commute

Italian commuters and tourists scrambled on Friday to negotiate a hodgepodge of bus, subway and train cancellations to get to their destinations during a one-day nationwide transport strike.

National and local unions protesting a stalemate in collective contract talks shut down buses, subways and trains throughout the country. The unions complain that management has not seriously bargained in the nearly four years since the last contract expired, and that workers' salaries are losing buying power. (AP)
