Egypt: Thousands march in Cairo, rulers promise democracy

None

Thousands of Egyptians marched from central Cairo to the Defense Ministry on Saturday to press military rulers for faster reforms one day after police used force to disperse demonstrators in Alexandria, witnesses said.

The protest came hours after the head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, promised in a televised speech to push ahead with elections to transform the Arab world's most populous nation into a democracy. Military vehicles blocked the main access to the Defense Ministry, where the military council is based, as military police armed with tasers and batons lined up in rows to stop the demonstrators.
