Israeli diplomatic mail reaches Lebanon

Package sent by Cyprus embassy to Jerusalem ends up in Beirut, Lebanese paper says

Wrong address: A package sent by Israel's embassy in Cyprus to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem ended up reaching Beirut's international airport onboard a Cypriote plane, Lebanese newspaper al-Nahar reported Wednesday.

Security officers at the airport seized the package and checked whether it contains explosives. Lebanese officials are now looking into the circumstances of the incident.

An initial examination revealed that the final destination on the package was clearly marked Jerusalem.

The package had been handed over to a military prosecutor in Lebanon, who will in turn transfer it to the Cypriote embassy in Lebanon. Cyprus will then likely send the package to its original destination.

In its report, the Lebanese newspaper stressed that "Lebanon has the right to open any diplomatic package in order to check whether it contains explosives."

The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem did not comment on the report.
