Esther Pollard: Jonathan in surgery

Wife of convicted Israeli spy says he has been suffering from deterioration in his medical condition

Jonathan Pollard, the convicted Israeli spy who has been serving a life sentence for espionage in a US prison was taken to a civilian hospital Tuesday most likely due to deterioration in his medical condition, his wife, Esther Pollard said.

Pollard has been suffering from various health-related complications – including a deterioration related to his kidney problems. His wife, who visited him on Monday at the Butner prison in North Carolina, said that she was trying to receive updates on his situation from the prison but so far - without success.

Esther said she was "climbing up the walls" with worry. "The last time Jonathan was taken to hospital in serious condition the doctor explained that his life was saved at the last minute," she noted. "I'm asking everyone – please pray for him."

The US prison where Pollard is serving his sentence has not confirmed that he was taken to hospital for an operation – not a an irregular response as in most cases prisons do not provide updates on prisoners being taken out of the prison walls for security purposes.

Last week Pollard received a visit from Israel's Ambassador to Washington Michael Oren. During the meeting Pollard expressed his fervent hope to be able to care for his wife who is battling against cancer.

"No one believed I would stay here for 26 years," Pollard told the Ambassador and asked that Peres and Netanyahu act on his behalf. The visit was the first made by an Israeli official in three and a half years. Oren expressed his condolences over the death of Pollard's father Dr. Morris Pollard six weeks ago.
